Top 5 Attributes of a Franchisee

Have you always been an entrepreneur? Even at a young age, were you making things and starting small businesses to make money?

That entrepreneurial spirit can take you to careers and industries that you never thought of before. The tenacity and optimism mixed with passion and drive make them an unstoppable force.

If you’ve branched out into different businesses, you know that it takes different characteristics and attributes to help a person succeed in that field as a franchisee.

Have you ever looked into becoming a franchisee? Why consider a franchise? A franchise is a great way to showcase your entrepreneurial while also helping you succeed in an already established business!

As a franchisee, there are certain attributes and traits that you should possess to reach maximum success! We’ve listed the top 5 attributes of a franchisee below!

Open-Mindedness

The first attribute of a successful franchisee is having an open mind and a willingness to learn.  When you take on a franchise, you will now learn a new way of building your business and managing your team through the standards set forth by the company and franchisor!

Understanding that your way of doing business might not be exactly the same way this company does business.  This is why it’s crucial to do your due diligence and find a franchise that matches your interests, values, and visions!

You will be learning a lot as you take on your new role as a franchisee, and you want to do it with optimism and an open mind!

Leader and Communicator

Leadership and communication skills are a MUST if you want to be a franchisee.  You are responsible for your store and how the business runs through your leadership. You’ll be the captain of the ship, so it’s essential to have good communication skills to keep everyone happy and moving toward success!

A great leader is influential, inspiring, has excellent customer service skills, and can teach, guide, and motivate their staff!

Team Player

Even though you must be an effective leader, you must also be a great team player. Again, this comes from both sides of being part of a franchise and being part of your in-house team.

If you don’t like to follow the rules and want to do your own thing, franchising might not be for you.  As a franchisee, you follow regulations and guidelines that ALL the franchises follow.  There may be some room for individuality because of location, sports teams, community, etc., but for the most part, you’ll be following a standard set of rules.

You must also be a team player for your staff.  As the owner, you need to follow just as much as you lead. Your team is your backbone to success.  You need to be open (see Attribute 1) and listen to their comments and concerns. You should allow them to teach you new ways of seeing things and how to keep everyone happy and fulfilled in their roles.

Passionate

If you aren’t passionate about your business, will it succeed? It’s one thing to be knowledgeable and experienced in your industry, but it’s another to be passionate about it.  The combination of those 3 traits will help bring you ultimate success.  You have to LOVE what you do, because when you don’t, how are you supposed to expect everyone else to love it too?

When you choose a franchise, don’t choose one just because it’s successful; choose it because you have a connection with the industry or mission.  You will be in charge of this business for a long time, so be sure it’s in line with your visions and passions.

When you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.

Ability to Ask for Help

You are part of a larger system now! You are not alone when you start in a franchise, or even if you’ve had one for years. If you need help, ASK!

9 times out of 10, your questions and concerns have been addressed before, and your support team has the right answers or protocols to correct the situation.

If you are struggling and need assistance, remember that everyone is there for the franchise’s good and the business’s success! Just like you want your team to come to you with concerns, you should feel just as comfortable going to your franchisor/support team for help.
